Guliel vs Wave — honest comparison (2026)
Guliel vs Wave — honest comparison (2026)
Summary
Wave is the strongest free-tier player in the US and Canada. It pairs free invoicing with free full double-entry accounting, then monetises through built-in payment processing fees. That model has worked for over a decade. The hard limit is geography — Wave is US and Canada only. Guliel is multi-country by design, ships native formats for 38+ jurisdictions, runs bidirectional supplier flow, and embeds AI as the operating interface. If you're a US or Canada-only freelancer who needs free books and a payment button today, Wave is hard to beat. If you sell across borders, manage multiple organizations, or need a back office that operates by chat, Guliel is the closer fit.

Pick Wave when…
You operate in the US or Canada, you bill in USD or CAD, you want one tool that does invoicing and full double-entry accounting for free today, and you want a payment button your clients can tap inside the invoice without setting up a separate Stripe account. Wave's built-in payments are a real retention hook — we don't have that shipped yet, and we won't pretend otherwise. If you're a one-person shop or a small US/CA service business and your tax filing lives entirely inside Wave today, the friction of switching is unlikely to pay off. Stay on Wave until you cross a border, hire a supplier-heavy ops model, or need a system the AI can drive.
Pick Guliel when…
You sell outside the US and Canada. Your invoices need to look right in Singapore, Germany, France, Japan, Belgium, the UK, Mexico, Brazil — or any of the 38+ countries we ship today. You buy from suppliers as well as sell to clients, and you want orders to flow out and invoices to flow back without email threads. You run multiple organizations under one login and you don't want to be charged per user. You want an AI companion that can build automations, log expenses from forwarded receipts, and run reports by chat. You're comfortable using Stripe (or whatever you already use) for payments until our native payments ship. Start at /invoicing, or bring your Wave data over via /migrate/from-wave.
FAQ
Is Wave really free?
The core invoicing and accounting tiers are free in the US and Canada. Wave Pro is around $16/mo for features like recurring billing, receipt scanning, and automation. Payment processing fees apply when you take card or ACH inside Wave. Guliel's free tier is $0 / org with a 200-invoice monthly cap and 5 active automations.
Can I use Wave outside the US and Canada?
Not officially. Wave's tax handling, banking integrations, and payment processing are US/CA-only. If you need to issue a compliant Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 invoice in Singapore or XRechnung in Germany, Wave isn't the right fit. Guliel ships native formats for 38+ countries.
Does Wave do supplier orders?
Not bidirectionally. Wave records bills you receive, but it doesn't issue a purchase order out to a supplier, notify them, accept their invoice back, and reconcile against the original PO. That round-trip is the unique supplier flow inside Guliel.
Does Guliel replace my accountant?
No. We don't ship full double-entry accounting — that's Wave, Xero, and QuickBooks territory and we say so plainly. We ship invoicing, expenses, reporting, supplier flow, logistics, and automations, and we export accountant-handoff bundles. Many Guliel customers run an accountant on the side.
Can I migrate from Wave to Guliel?
Yes — see /migrate/from-wave. We import customers, invoices, and payments from Wave's CSV exports. We don't import your chart of accounts because we don't run a full general ledger. Move in, keep the history.
What about built-in payments?
Wave has them today; we don't. Native payments are on our roadmap. Until then, Guliel customers typically integrate Stripe (or PayPal, GoCardless, etc.) on the side and link the payment back to the invoice. Honest gap, owning it.
